Healthcare Professionals: Rationale
Rationale
Approximately 1 in 10 adults in the world have diagnosed diabetes. A much larger number of people have pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose levels) and many of these people will develop diabetes within a five year period. It is now well known that people with dysglycemia are at high risk for cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, strokes and even death.
ORIGIN was based on studies suggesting that lowering the blood sugar levels to normal with basal insulin may reduce the chance of serious cardiovascular outcomes, reduce the chance of developing diabetes in people who do not have diabetes, and slow the progression of dysglycemia. Other studies suggest the introduction of omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of these problems in different ways.
